Hot Barre in St. Albert

Hot barre at Afitness is a low impact, high repetition strength class taught in a heated room. It targets the legs, glutes, core, and arms with small, controlled movements until the muscles fatigue, then lengthens everything with deep stretching. No dance background is needed. Hot barre is included in every hot class membership and pack at Afitness, a women only studio in St. Albert.

What barre is

Barre is a strength class inspired by ballet conditioning, Pilates, and functional training. The signature of barre is small, controlled, high repetition movements that work the legs, glutes, core, and arms to fatigue. Nobody at Afitness is asked to perform choreography. The barre, or the wall and small props, is simply a tool for balance.

What hot barre is like at Afitness

The room is warmed before class so your muscles are ready to work from the first minute. The class runs 50 minutes with a five minute warm up and five minute cool down. A typical class moves through a standing warm up, arm work with light weights for high repetitions, a thigh and glute series using pulses and holds, seat work on the mat with bands, Pilates balls, or weighted rings, core work, and a final stretch. The heat raises your heart rate and increases sweat, which a room temperature barre class does not do.

Who hot barre is for

Barre is one of the most accessible formats for women who are new to exercise or returning after a long break. There is no jumping and no complex choreography, and every movement can be scaled by reducing range, dropping the weights, or taking a break. It is also a favourite of experienced members who want leg and glute definition without heavy loading. Barre uses light loads and high repetitions, which builds endurance and tone rather than size.

Hot barre vs hot Pilates

Both are heated, both are 50 minutes, and both are included in the same hot memberships. Hot mat Pilates focuses on core control, spinal movement, and full body sequences with a slower, more precise tempo. Hot barre spends more time standing, uses more pulsing and isometric holds, and leans harder into the legs and glutes. Many members alternate the two across the week.

What to wear and bring

Fitted, breathable activewear and grip socks, which matter in barre because much of the class is standing on a sweaty mat. Bring a towel and a large water bottle. Pregnant clients may not attend heated classes. If you have a medical condition, notify the instructor and provide medical clearance before participating.
