Reformer Pilates in St. Albert
Afitness Pilates offers reformer Pilates classes for women in St. Albert, minutes from north and west Edmonton. Our reformer studio is a room temperature space with a machine for every client, 50 minute classes, and instructors who correct your form throughout. Classes are open to all levels, from complete beginners to experienced movers, and every exercise can be made lighter or heavier with a change of springs.
What is reformer Pilates?
The reformer is a bed frame with a sliding carriage attached to springs. You push, pull, and stabilize against the spring resistance using a foot bar, straps, and the carriage itself. The springs support you while you learn and challenge you as you get stronger, which is why reformer Pilates is both beginner friendly and demanding. It builds full body strength with a focus on the core, glutes, inner and outer thighs, and upper back, improves posture and spinal mobility, and is gentle on the knees, hips, and lower back.
What a reformer class is like at Afitness
Every class runs 50 minutes: a five minute warm up, about 40 minutes of work, and a five minute cool down. A typical class moves through footwork, a core series, arm and leg work with the straps, lunges and squats on the carriage, and standing or kneeling balance work. Your instructor gives spring settings for each exercise and offers lighter and heavier options so you can work at your level. The pace is controlled and precise. Expect your muscles to shake.
Who reformer Pilates is for
Reformer Pilates suits women who want to build strength without impact, improve posture, support an active lifestyle, or return to exercise after a break or injury. Afitness is located on the second floor above Adam Physio and Wellness, and many clients combine physiotherapy with reformer classes under the guidance of their physiotherapist. If you are pregnant, think you may be pregnant, or have a medical condition, let the instructor know and provide medical clearance before participating.
What to wear and bring
Wear fitted leggings or shorts and a fitted top so nothing catches in the springs or straps. Grip socks are required on the reformer. Tie long hair back and avoid jewellery or zippers that could scratch the equipment. Bring a water bottle. Mats and all small equipment are provided.
